Too Much Medicine, and Too Few Checks
Personal Health: Too Much Medicine, and Too Few Checks - NYTimes.com: Overmedication of the elderly is an all too common problem, a public health crisis that compromises the well-being of growing numbers of older adults. Many take fistfuls of prescription and over-the-counter medications on a regular basis, risking serious and sometimes fatal side effects and drug interactions.
An interdisciplinary panel of 11 experts in geriatric care and pharmacology has updated the so-called Beers Criteria, guidelines long used to minimize such drug-related disasters in the elderly. After reviewing more than 2,000 high-quality research studies of drugs prescribed for older adults, the team highlighted 53 potentially inappropriate medications or classes of medication and placed them in one of three categories: drugs to avoid in general in the elderly; drugs to avoid in older people with certain diseases and syndromes; and drugs to use with caution in the elderly if there are no acceptable alternatives.

Caregiver Lunch and Learn
Scheduled for Thursday April 5. We have a speaker scheduled at noon. Claire Torp from the American Red Cross will be speaking about fall prevention and what you can do at home to keep yourself and your loved one safe.
On Thursday April 19 from 6:30 to 7:30 we will have Ms. Carla Sorenson from Holland Home speaking on stress reduction for caregivers. This meeting is free and open to the public.
On Tuesday April 24 at 7:00, Kendra Schumaker MSW, CSW will be speaking on The Blessings of Caregiving: One Woman's Story at the Thornapple Covenant Church which is located at 6595 Cascade Rd. SE (near the corner of Cascade and Burton). This support group is free, open to the public, and will offer a time for sharing of concerns.

Assisted Suicide: A Recipe for Elder Abuse and a Threat to Individual Rights
Elder abuse includes physical, psychological and financial abuse. Financial abuse is the most commonly reported type. Elder abuse is, however, largely unreported and can be very difficult to detect. This is due in part to the reluctance of victims to report.
If assisted suicide were to be legalized [in Canada], new paths of abuse would be created against the elderly. The most obvious path would be due to [the] lack of required witnesses at the death. Without disinterested witnesses, an opportunity is created for a family member, or someone else who will benefit from the patient's death, to administer the medication to the patient without his consent. Our topic this month is Estate, Elder Planing, and Ethicial Will Workshop. Jill Goodall, Esq. will discuss the importance of estate and elder planning and will include tips about how to set up an ethical will. This is an important topic; you won't want to miss this presentation! Lite snacks will be provided; no RSVP is neccessary.

MacArthur ‘Genius’ Grant Goes to D.C. Activist Who Fights Elder Abuse: Marie-Therese Connolly, who for years has been trying to place elder abuse in the national spotlight, is being awarded a MacArthur Fellowship, the $500,000, “no strings attached,” so-called “genius” grant given annually to a couple dozen artists, thinkers, social advocates and historians.
In issuing the award, the foundation said Connolly, a senior scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center, has “devoted her career to laying bare the many forms of elder abuse: physical and psychological, as well as financial exploitation and wrongful deprivation of rights.”

Japanese Seniors: Amazing example of self-sacrifice
Japanese Seniors: Send Us To Damaged Nuclear Plant : NPR: They are all retirees, and they have all volunteered for a single, dangerous mission: to replace younger workers at the badly damaged Fukushima nuclear plant. The Skilled Veterans Corps for Fukushima consists of more than 500 seniors who have signed up for a job that has been called courageous — and suicidal.
Kazuko Sasaki, a 72-year-old grandmother, is one of those ready to serve. "My generation built these nuclear plants. So we have to take responsibility for them. We can't dump this on the next generation," she says.

Caregiver support group meets Thursday
Mike Faber, the Associate Director of the Older Learner Center, will be speaking on Understanding Aging in Relationship to Caregiving. This is a great group to attend whether you are a veteran caregiver, or if you are relatively new caring for yourself while you are caring for others. The group will be in session from 6:30 to 8:30 and will meet at SarahCare. Light refreshments will be served.

Doctors in the UK are prescribing drinking water for neglected elderly patients to stop them dying of thirst in hospital. The measure – to remind nurses of the most basic necessity – is revealed in a damning report on pensioner care in NHS wards.
